Styles and Practices
Mindfulness meditation is geared towards developing equanimity and concentration. In any meditation, you can focus on either “skill” or they can often be combined. Together, they lead to mindfulness of the present moment: alert, non-judgmental, moment by moment awareness.
Equanimity
A classic equanimity practice is open awareness, often called choiceless awareness or “just sitting”.
With open awareness, we practice being with our experience without the push and pull that often characterizes how we interact with both pleasant and unpleasant experiences.
Concentration
Concentration methods such as following the breath teach us to stay with our experience and develop steady awareness on a single object of attention.
Sometimes called “one-pointed awareness,” concentration is key to developing present-moment awareness and is often practiced in combination with an equanimity approach.
Mindfulness Courses for Lawyers, Paralegals, and other Professionals
Staying in the present moment, clarity of perception, and composure are all skills that are cultivated through mindfulness. The Law Society of Ontario has recognized that work-life balance and wellness is an important part of professionalism.
Fall 2021: Mindfulness for Lawyers, Paralegals and Other Professionals
Starting this fall on October 26th, 2021, Dan will be running a live, online four-week workshop, which includes a professionalism component accredited through the Law Society of Ontario for Continuing Professional Development.
Course Details
This fall’s workshop includes two basic components. The first part will involve a formal, guided practice. The second consists of interactive teaching that deconstructs the basic elements of mindfulness and delves into its relevance to concentration, perception, and well-being.
Each session is approximately 60 minutes long. In the end, you will have learned basic mindfulness skills and practices. Whether you are an absolute beginner or you have some experience, you can gain a lot by coming to a session. The fee for the four-week, four session workshop is $100.00 plus HST ($113.00).
Dan has been taught and mentored by many incredible teachers since starting on this road. They include Dr. Patricia Rockman, the director of the Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto (where he took teacher training), Toronto’s Jeff Warren, Shinzen Young, Rebecca Li, and others.
Dan will be doing a live, online Info Session for the course on October 5th at 7 pm. You can find out more by clicking here.
